Feb 19 2015 01:51pmTechnology Trivia: Three Important Chess Computers
Playing chess against a computer opponent is fairly commonplace stuff today. But the development of computers able to play chess competitively led to many important milestones in artificial intelligence, culminating (at least for now) with Watson, the famous Jeopardy!-playing computer, and Siri, the iPhone virtual assistant. If you're interested in learning more about the history of artificial intelligence, here are three important chess computers:Kotok-McCarthyThe Kotok-McCarthy computer was was developed between the years of 1959 and 1962 by a group of students at MIT. Advanced for the time, it was very slow by today's standards: it took anywhere from five to twenty minutes to calculate a single move! This computer also participated in the very first chess match between two machines, losing to a slightly more advanced computer from the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics.Deep ThoughtDeep Thought was developed in a partnership between Carnegie Mellon University and IBM; it was named after a fictional computer in the book series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The computer won the North American Computer Chess Championship in 1988 and the World Computer Chess Championship in 1989. Deep Thought is perhaps most well known for losing two widely-publicized games to chess champion Gerry Kasparov.Deep BlueDeep Blue was developed as a successor to Deep Thought. In 1997, it beat Gerry Kasparov twice yet losing the match 4-2. The match was controversial, as Kasparov later accused technicians of making moves on Deep Blue's behalf. The match -- and the controversy -- later became the subject for a documentary called Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine.CC-BY-SA-2.0/Flickr/soupboy

Feb 05 2015 01:34pmWant to Clean Your Oven Without Chemicals? Here's How!
Your secret recipe for lasagna might be a smash hit within your family, but its cheesy, greasy droppings have left their mark on your oven. You don't have to reach for a chemical cleaner, however. Instead, rely on a little bit of elbow grease and these three steps:1) Gather your supplies. Here's what you'll need to tackle your oven's caked-on grease and grime: liquid dish soap, white vinegar, water, and baking soda. (You can add a few drops of scented essential oil to the mix, if desired.) Combine the ingredients to form a paste (recipe here).2) Spread and sit.Put on a pair of rubber gloves, and spread the paste all over the interior of your oven, avoiding the heating elements. For maximum effectiveness, allow the paste to sit at least eight hours—or longer, if possible.3) Rinse and shine.Using a damp cloth, wipe the paste from the oven. This will likely require several wipe-downs, so be sure to rinse the towel frequently throughout the process. Should grease remain in any particular area, reapply the paste mixture to the spot, allow it to sit an additional 30 minutes, then rinse. Repeat as needed. How to Clean an Oven With Baking Soda and Vinegar [The Kitchn]How to Clean an Oven Naturally [MNN]Make Your Own Inexpensive Natural Oven Cleaner [YumUniverse]CC-BY-SA-2.0/Flickr/Remy Sharp
